I do believe that the SEC are right, and creating a false sense of urgency about a sale to put pressure on buyers - "get your Howeycoins now!" - is scammy an unprofessional. But, as an event marketer, I know it's all about momentum and building a buzz.

Local Coin Swap (who I have posted about before and declared an interest) have allowed two months for their ICO, and at the mid point this seems to be working well - no panic buying or pressure, just bonuses for getting in early,

As an ICO, you want to find the right balance between stretching things out forever (wasting time) and moving too quickly (missing out on potential investors).

On the short end of the spectrum, giving people very little time to create a sense of urgency can be great for short-term sales, but you might be missing out on a large pool of potential investors who never had an opportunity to see what your project is all about. However, this isn't to say that you want to sit around forever until new investors completely slow to a halt.

The aim should be to find the perfect length that optimizes funds raised and time spent wallowing around in early development, "stuck" as an ICO, so to speak. As you mentioned above, the two month ICO of Local Coin Swap seemed to be bringing in a good, steady amount of investors. I'd argue that with the right amount of marketing and exposure, the best ICO length is probably a little bit shorter than that, somewhere between 4-6 weeks.

The investors will get in if you afford them the time, get your name out there, and offer attractive bonuses, but it's important to stay fresh on their minds.
